Pelican Lake in Orr is 11,546 acres in size with numerous islands and bays for exploring. Some of the islands have seasonal cabins. A large portion of the North West side of the lake is public lands. Several Public Landings are on the lake with parking areas for people to park and enjoy the lake for a few hours or for many days. Several resorts are on the lake if you would like to rent a boat for the day or lake cabin. Renting a cabin on the water can be a nice way to test drive the lake. Pelican Lake has city dock where you can park and walk to the stores and restaurants in Orr. When you pass through Orr you see a bay of the lake and the rest of the large lake is around the point.
Pelican Lake information
Pelican Lake has a depth of 38 feet, however the about half of the lake is 15 feet deep. With new fishing regulations the numbers of fish have increased. July 2012 the Minnesota Department of Natural Resouces preformed a fish survey. They found that the Black crappie abundance greatly exceeded the level for this lake type and was the highest level ever observed in Pelican Lake. Length in trap nets ranged from 3.9 to 12.6 inches and the mean was 6.2. Sixty-six percent of the sample were from the 2010 year-class, which could provide great fishing and reproduction in the near future
Bluegill were in the normal range for the lake and the Northern were well above normal for this lake class. The size of the northern have increased over time, maybe due to the new regulations where 24-36 inch fish are protected. Walleye abundance was the highest level ever observed in Pelican Lake. Mean length was 17.5 inches with a range from 11.2 to 27.0. Eleven year-classes were present, which was the most year-classes ever observed. In 2012, age ranged from 2-18 years and age-2 fish represented 41 percent of sample. Mean weight was well above the normal range observed in similar lakes. Many people also fish for bass on Pelican Lake.
Pelican Lake in near many more lakes in the area. Myrtle Lake, Ash Lake, Vermilion and the Voyageur National Park Lakes are a short drive from Pelican Lake.
Snowmobile trails can be accessed from the lake if you want to spend the weekend at your cabin during the winter enjoying the winter sports. The Gheen Hill Trails a few miles down the road from Orr are also good for hiking, and snowshoeing in the winter.
The Big Island on Pelican Lake is
Big Island on Pelican Lake is a Scientific and and Natural Area.
The island on Pelican Lake has a variety of birds 40 types and there are numerous types of plants. The trees are 150 years old. The link above will take you to the Minnesota DNR site that has greater details on the Big Island on Pelican Lake. The island does not have a trails but supports duck hunting. You can have your dog at the island while duck hunting.
Some people will swim an the area near the island. Other people will fish around the island. Be sure to look for the eagles and osprey on the island.
When done exploring the island the lake around the island take a trip into Orr and do a little shopping in town. There are a couple docks in town at the landing. The Post office in Orr is a short walk as well as the grocery store, bait shop and hardware store. The RE/MAX Lake Country office is within site of the boat landing.
