Winchester Lake

Winchester Lake is located near Elbow Lake, Cook,  Susan Lake and about 12 miles West of Orr.  To access this lake you would travel on seasonal logging roads. Winchester Lake is 319 acres in size and has a maximum depth of 50 feet. There is a public access on the lake, however it is a carry in access, so bring your canoe.

MN DNR Lake Information Winchester Lake is managed for Lake Trout and plans to establish lake trout called for annual stocking from 2005 through 2009. Follow the first five years, stocking will be completed every other year. The introductory stocking was successful in establishing an abundant lake trout population in Winchester Lake. Lake trout gillnet abundance (13.00/net) during this survey was the second highest in the International Falls Management Area. Lake trout from 8.0 to 20.6 inches were caught during the survey and the average length was 14.1 inches. The average weight was 1.07 pounds. All of the trout caught had fin clips indicating that they were stocked. Although aging the catch was not possible, it appears as if several year-classes are present. Several of the fish captured were mature and, if they could find suitable habitat, likely spawned during the fall of 2009.

Blue Gill are the other type of fish in the lake. The trapnet catch rate of bluegill (14.78/net) was the highest recorded for Winchester and was the second highest in the International Falls Management Area. Bluegill ranged from 4.9 to 8.7 inches and averaged 6.9 inches. Nearly 10% of the bluegill caught exceeded seven inches in length.

Winchester lake is not highly developed and most of the parcels are over 10 aces in size and most lake parcels average about 20 acres. A lake home or cabin on Winchester Lake will be off the grind and you will most likely be using a combination of solar, generators and propane for your lake cabin. Enjoy the call of the loons, and sightings of various wildlife. Bear, wolves, deer, beaver and eagles are seen in the area.  the St Louis County tax records only show 7 properties on the lake with buildings. With so few cabins on the lake and limited access you could often be the only person on Winchester Lake.  Lake cabins vary from the large log home to the rustic simple cabin. No matter what size parcel or type of cabin you choose you will enjoy this remote area if you like quite and the wilderness.
